PENNY FARTHING, the Grammy Award-winning actress, comedian, singer, and songwriter who has a new album in the works and has been touring with the band Pennywise, is a tour guide for the Pennywise Tour, a bike-sharing program in Chicago.
We caught up with the singer-songwriter in Chicago, where she and her bandmates will be opening up for the first time on Tuesday.
The tour started out with a bang.
You’ve done some shows with us in the past, right?
You started with a show in New York City, then came back to New York.
What was that like?PENNY FARETHING: Well, the first show in Manhattan I played with them in was called “Wake Up, Mr. Jackson.”
And it was really good.
It was really great.
And then I played a show with them, “Pleasure” and “The Biggest Loser,” where we had a couple of guys onstage and we were just laughing about life, and we had some great time.
And they’re a lot of fun to be around.
I’m so happy to be back with them.
I’ve always been interested in touring.
It’s something I’ve wanted to do.
I have been touring, and now I’m going to do it with them for the very first time.
I think it’s just been an incredible feeling.
You know, they’re going, “Yeah, I’ll come along for sure.”
I don’t know if they were expecting me to come along, but they were super excited to see me again.
You can’t really predict that.
I love playing with them and I love to do them shows.
But the real fun is just when you come back and they play, and you get to see them, and the crowd goes wild.
And that’s what I like about it.
You’re just sitting there like, “Oh my god, it’s so fun.”
You play with some great musicians on tour, like Dolly Parton, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga.
Do you see yourself in any of them?
Nope, not at all.
They all have different personalities.
And I love the way they make music.
I don’s not necessarily have a thing to do with their music.
But I’m just excited to be a part of it.
I think when I get to know them, I’m excited to have them, because they’re really talented.
I just like the way that they express themselves.
And when I’m around them, it just gives me the energy and the energy to go, “Okay, I’ve got to make this sound.”PENY FAREIT: I think the first song they ever played was “Loyalty” which is a beautiful, beautiful song.
And the last song they did was “I Can’t Get Enough.”
And the reason why I like those songs is that it was just, like, an absolute joy to play them.
And so when you play a song like that, you’re like, what a joy to sing it.
I’m so grateful for that.
Because I don t know how to do that.
[laughs] It’s so easy to play something really good when you’ve got your voice down and you just wanna be a little bit louder and be a bit louder.
And you don’t really want to be quiet.
But you know, you gotta play it the way it’s meant to be.
[chuckles] So I love doing that.PEN, what do you think of the way the world sees you as a musician?
I just try to take it in stride, you know?
I don’ t know if it’s really something that matters.
It seems like everyone has this opinion on what I do.
But, I mean, I don thinks that people have this opinion about my music.
It just kind of is a part that I am involved in, and I’m a musician.
I feel like that.
But if you talk to people, I can tell you that, like you said, people are like, I feel bad for you.
I mean you’ve done it all your life.
What can I say?
[laughs} I mean people are really excited about what I’m doing.
I don’t want to compare my music to other musicians, because I just think that we’re doing something different.
I want to just be myself.
I like to write my own songs.
And there’s people out there that I like, that I think I can relate to, because, you see me on the road with Pennywise.
I never have to worry about the things that other people are concerned about.
So I’m like, let’s just do what we do, because that’s just what I did, and that’s my style
